LUNG CANCER

By: Sophie Mao

INTRODUCTION

Cancer occurs when cells begin to grow out of control in one’s body. Specifically, lung cancer occurs when this phenomenon occurs in the lungs. It is one of the most common cancers, as it is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in the US in both men and women and the leading cause of cancer death. However, there does seem to be hope as fewer and fewer people are getting diagnosed with this cancer every year due to better treatment and less smoking. There are several risk factors for lung cancer (genes, smoke, etc), and through this research paper, we will analyze some data from patients to see some of the biggest risk factors or trends that occur in this cancer.

DATA

About the Data

The data is collected from the website: online lung cancer prediction system and was later posted on Kaggle. It takes into consideration several factors that might cause lung cancer:

Gender: M(male), F(female)

Age: Age of the patient

Smoking: YES=2 , NO=1.

Yellow fingers: YES=2 , NO=1.

Anxiety: YES=2 , NO=1.

Peer_pressure: YES=2 , NO=1.

Chronic Disease: YES=2 , NO=1.

Fatigue: YES=2 , NO=1.

Allergy: YES=2 , NO=1.

Wheezing: YES=2 , NO=1.

Alcohol: YES=2 , NO=1.

Coughing: YES=2 , NO=1.

Shortness of Breath: YES=2 , NO=1.

Swallowing Difficulty: YES=2 , NO=1.

Chest pain: YES=2 , NO=1.

Lung Cancer: YES , NO.

VISUALIZATIONS AND ANALYSIS

These visualizations take some of the factors to try to see if they have an obvious connection to lung cancer. By doing this, we are trying to analyze patterns between lung cancers and their symptoms. This research will allow us to identify the most notable symptoms and best indicators of lung cancer.

1) Age

After taking a close look at this chart, we see that the average age of those who don’t have lung cancer is 60.744 and the average age of those who do is 62.952. This implies that age is not a huge factor in lung cancer.

2) Chest Pains

309 people reported they had chest pains. 270 of these people had lung cancer while 39 didn’t. This indicates that chest pains are a clear indicator of lung cancer and should definitely be reported when experienced.

CONCLUSION

Lung Cancer is a serious illness that is important to identify in its early stages. There are a series of symptomes linked up with this condition, with some having a more direct correlation than others. For example, chest pains are shown to have a notable connection with lung cancer, while age does not. However, any of the factors in the data are believed to have some level of correspondence to this disease, so it is important to always be on the lookout for these symptoms, especially those that are more directly related to lung cancer.
